The
Official Naming Ceremony of the new Seahouses IB1 Inshore Lifeboat
Service No D-686 "Peter Downes"
The Ceremony took place at Seahouses Lifeboat Station at 11am on Saturday
12th July, 2008. The boat was named by the widow of Peter Downes, who has
since remarried, Carolyn McLaughlin, and her family. She was
joined by her husband Gerry McLaughlin, and her many friends and supporters.
Local dignitaries from Berwick Borough Council, the local clergy, friends and
supporters of the station, invited guests, and a large contingent of onlooking
members of the public all supported the event. A picture was presented to
Carolyn, which had been prepared and framed by
Kickass Images, of Main Street,
Seahouses. The VIP's and Invited Guests enjoyed an excellent buffet and
refreshments, including a magnificent Naming cake, provided by local Trotters
Bakers of Seahouses. Both the framed picture of D-686 and the buffet were so
kindly donated. Our Special Thanks to Kickass Images and Trotters Bakers, both
of Seahouses .

Peter Downes died in a diving accident in the Channel. His widow, friends and family, raised sufficient funds in his memory to buy two IB1's for the RNLI. One was stationed at Pwhelli, while D-686 was allocated to Seahouses. The boat arrived in January 2008, after delays due to some problems with the floor material. This was resolved, and crew training on the new boat began as soon as it was made ready for sea. Faster that our previous boat, and with GPS Navigation and other improvements, D-686 was a very welcome addition to the Seahouses Station ! Photo by courtesy of Cliff Crone. The Girls Brigade did a great job distributing the programmes for the ceremony. The canoeists had been reported overdue, in worsening weather conditions. They were quickly located by the Lifeboats and an RAF Helicopter, and brought to the safety of Seahouses Harbour. Authentic salt water on the lens, I'm afraid.
