LIFEBOAT REQUESTED TO LAUNCH TO TRANSPORT PARAMEDICS TO HOLY ISLAND
At 16:57hr on 09 June 2013 Humber Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses All Weather Lifeboat to transport an ambulance crew to Holy Island, which was cut off by the tide. An elderly lady had taken ill and required urgent medical assistance. (This is an agreed protocol with the North East Ambulance Service).
The Lifeboat crew was assembled and the Lifeboat was removed from the boathouse to the slip and prepared for launch.
At 17:16hr, as the launch was about to commence, Humber Coastguard cancelled the request. The nearest available road ambulance was at Borders General Hospital, so it was prudent to direct the ambulance to Berwick Lifeboat Station, and for the Berwick Lifeboat to deal with the incident. By the time the Berwick boat reached the island with the paramedics, the tide was falling, making landing difficulty. The casualty was evntually evacuated across the causeway by road as the tide receded.
The Seahouses Lifeboat had meanwhile been released, and was returned to the boathouse and rehoused.
