Launch Report 013-014/2015
MISSING CHILDREN ON SEAHOUSES BEACH
At 21.01hrs on Friday 24 July 2015, Humber Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses Lifeboat, to carry out a waterline search of the beach north of Seahouses, for two missing children, a girl aged 11 and a boy aged 8, last seen about three and a half hours ago. There was obviously some concern in case they had entered the water. The Inshore Lifeboat was initially launched, but as the light was fading, and in case the incident might escalate due to the time the children had been missing, the All Weather Lifeboat was also launched.
The Inshore lifeboat began a rapid search along the shoreline from Seahouses north towards Bamburgh. Meanwhile local shore based coastguard units were being mobilised and local police were attending. The RAF helicopter was tasked elsewhere and unavailable. The Police Helicopter was travelling and the new coastguard helicopter was requested from its base at Hull, but would take some time to reach Seahouses.
The All Weather Lifeboat began searching the beach area, with the crew using binoculars. Two children matching the description circulated, were sighted just north of the Islestone rocks. The lifeboat beached and one crewman in a drysuit, swam ashore to confirm the childrens’ identity. Once established that these were the missing children, the lifeboat directed local coastguards and police to the location. The children were safe and well, and were reunited by the police with their anxious parents. Both Lifeboats then returned to station, where they were thanked by Humber Coastguard and Northumbria Police for their swift response and positive outcome.
