Launch Report 025/2013
ILL DIVER AT BLUE CAPS NEAR LONGSTONE LIGHTHOUSE, FARNE ISLANDS
At 12.41hr on Saturday 5th October 2013, Seahouses Lifeboat Operations Manager heard a dive Rib (inflatable boat) call Humber Coastguard on VHF Ch 16, reporting one of their divers had taken ill prior to diving, and was in "a bad way" with chest pains. The boat was at the Blue Caps near Longstone Island at the Farne Islands. The RAF Rescue helicopter was immediately tasked but had to divert to RAF Boulmer to refuel before attending the scene.
The Operations Manager contacted Humber Coastguard and offered the services of the Inshore Lifeboat which could probably reach the casualty before the helicopter, and which carried medical equipment and oxygen. All RNLI Crews are trained to RNLI Medic Casualty Care level. It was agreed to dispatch the ILB, and the crew were paged for immediate launch. Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat reached the scene as the helicopter arrived, and was able to give assistance till the ill diver could be winched onto the aircraft and flown to hospital. The Inshore Lifeboat was then released and returned to station. One of the Inshore Lifeboat Crew who was aboard the ILB was also an Ambulance First Responder.
The RNLI have no information about the casualty or his condition, other than he was male.
