Launch Report 027-028/2017
BODY BOARDER BEING CARRIED OUT TO SEA OFF BEADNELL POINT
At 18:09hr on Thursday 17th August 2017, UKCG requested the immediate launch of Seahouses Lifeboats, following a report of a female on a body board without wetsuit or lifejacket, being carried out to sea off Beadnell point. Another body board had allegedly gone into the water to try and assist the female who had gone out of sight.
Both boats paged and quickly launched, and made best speed to the search area. Local Coastguard teams from Seahouses, Holy Island and Howick also mobilised. After an initial search and enquires with local boats, it was established that the casualty had come ashore safely and was safe and well, which was confirmed by local coastguards officers on the shore. All resources were then stood down, and returned to respective stations.
Seahouses Lifeboat Operations Manager Ian Clayton commented, “It is so disappointing that despite all of the safety advice from the RNLI and UK Coastguard, people are still going into the sea so complacently, without proper safety equipment such as a wetsuit and life jacket. The cold water and power of the tide cannot be underestimated, and this is yet another incident that could easily have ended tragically”.
