Launch Report 032/2016

At 05.09hr on Wednesday 31st August 2016, Humber Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses Lifeboat, to assist the North East Ambulance Service to reach an ill 5yr old child with suspected meningitus. It was outside of the safe crossing time for the tidal Causeway.

The All Weather Lifeboat RNLB Grace Darling was quickly launched, as the ambulance arrived at Seahouses from its station at Belford. The Lifeboat Coxswain queried the status of the tide, as it was ebbing, and was concerned whether the lifeboat would be able to reach the island pier due to the depth of water. Holy Island Coastguards had also been mobilised, and they checked and confirmed that the causeway was now safe to cross. The Lifeboat was stood down and the ambulance diverted to Holy Island by road. On arrival, it was escorted by the Coastguards to the casualty’s location.

Seahouses Lifeboat Operations Manager Ian Clayton commented, “There was a near full turn out of our crew this morning for this call, and we will always assist the ambulance crews when requested, as well as the community at Holy Island who are cut off from the mainland twice a day by the tide. We hope the young child this morning makes a full recovery.
