Launch Report 033/2016

TWO PERSONS TRAPPED ON HOLY ISLAND CAUSEWAY

At 15.03hr on Wednesday 31st August 2016, Humber Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat, to assist an elderly couple trapped on Holy Island Causeway. Due to the High Winds around the Causeway, the Inshore Lifeboat was taken by road and launched at the Causeway.

On reaching the stranded couple, the male was standing in the water by his car near the refuge tower, while his wife was still in the car. Both were helped aboard the Inshore Lifeboat, and brought ashore on the mainland side, where they were handed into the care of local coastguards and the police. It is believed that the couple had misread the safe crossing times, and subsequently attempted to cross the Causeway which was unsafe between 12.55hr and 18.40hr.

Their car was abandoned on the Causeway, to be recovered later when the tide receded. The couple are believed to be from the Yorkshire area.
