“MAYDAY” DISTRESS CALL FROM PARTY OF KAYAKERS NEAR LONGSTONE ISLAND

At 14:51hr on Saturday 03 September, 2011, Seahouses Lifeboat Duty Launch Authority was paged by Humber coastguard and informed that a MAYDAY call had been received from a party of Kayakers reporting two of there party had capsized and were unable to recover themselves. It was originally reported that there were six canoes in total.

Both the Inshore  and All Weather Lifeboats launched at 14:55hr and proceeded to the scene. On arrival one casualty had been picked up by passenger craft “Golden Gate”, while the other two were escorted to Longstone Island by a Dive Rib  (rigid inflatable boat) used by the Atherton Sub Aqua Club, which had also  answered the Mayday Call, where they were soon joined by the Inshore Lifeboat. On arrival of the All Weather Lifeboat, the one casualty on the Golden Gate and the further two on the Longstone Island were assessed by lifeboat crew and the paramedic winchman from the RAF Rescue helicopter also tasked to the incident.

They were found to be shocked and a little cold but did not require any medical attention. All three casualties and their kayaks were taken on board the All Weather Lifeboat and returned to Seahouses Harbour and handed into the care of shore based HM Coastguard Rescue Officers.
