DISTRESS MALE IN SEA AT ENTRANCE TO SEAHOUSE HARBOUR

As Seahouses Lifeboat Crew were undergoing their final session of their RNLI Medics Casualty Care Course, they were called to a real medical emergency. At 14.43hr on Thursday 2011, a distressed male was reported in the sea at the entrance to Seahouses Harbour. A lifeboat crewman at that location, with a life jacket from his van, had entered the water to go to his assistance. The Inshore Lifeboat was launched immediately, and both the distressed male and the crewman were quickly rescued and brought ashore, where the male was given emergency medical aid by the Lifeboat Crew and Ambulance personnel. He had possible serious injuries, and was urgently airlifted to Wansbeck hospital by an RAF Helicopter from RAF Boulmer.
Police and local Coastguard Rescue Officers also assisted at the scene. The RNLI have no further information about the male’s identity or condition. Further enquiries were being made by Northumbria Police. The Lifeboat Crewman returned home to change his wet clothes and take a warm shower. He was otherwise well and had no ill effects from his immersion in the cold sea water. Lifeboat Operations Manager Ian Clayton commented "The distressed man was indeed fortunate that our crew could respond so quickly, and their actions undoubtedly saved his life. I would like to commend the actions of the crewman who entered a very cold Seahouses harbour, in a brave attempt to rescue this man. Fortunately he suffered no ill effects from his rescue attempt."
The Lifeboat then returned to station, and the Crew were able to resume their Training Course. All passed successfully !
